For those of you looking to invest in an air purifier, you may first want to learn a bit about the basics.  There are hundreds of purifiers on the market today, and it is important to become familiar with some of the terms associated with these machines.  First and foremost, HEPA purifiers can eliminate certain contaminants in the air based on their size, which is measured in microns.  Basically, a micron is a metric unit that signifies one-millionth of a meter.

If you’ve ever researched air purification, you may have stumbled upon the term HEPA.  HEPAYou have choices about the air you breath at home stands for High Efficiency Particulate Accumulation.  These types of filters are used to filter and suspend harmful substances from the air.  They are used today in a variety of environments, including military bases, science laboratories, and homes across the country.  Glass particles are merged together to form the core filter of the unit, which is said to be very large in size.  Standard HEPA filters can remove approximately 99.7% of airborne particles that are no larger than .3 microns. Is this the techonology you are seeking in household air purifier?

The efficiency level of these units is highly dependent on the surface area of the filter inside, and considering that they require a powerful blower to circulate the air, there can be a high energy cost associated with their operation.  The filters must also be replaced once every 6-18 months depending on the level of particulate contamination, which is another disadvantage.  Considering they cost an average of about $100 to replace, it can be very pricy to maintain a unit after purchasing.  However, if used properly, HEPA filters can remove some of the smallest dust, smoke, and pollen contaminants in the air.

bug-zapper.gif (15539 bytes)But just how does a HEPA filter work?  Basically, as air circulates throughout the unit, harmful contaminants are removed, and the newly purified air reenters the surroundings.  Quite simply, the more the air passes through the filter in a given period, the cleaner it becomes, which is known as an air exchange rate.  Most HEPA filters are strong enough to successfully purify in one room only; families tend to keep them in their living room or common area, as that is the space where the most time is spent.  Units are priced based on their hourly air exchange rates, as some are more efficient in purifying the air at faster speeds.

Many confuse HEPA filters with UV air purifiers.  It should be noted that these two types of air purification devices operate in a completely different fashion.  UV purifiers negatively charge theprofgoofy.gif (12202 bytes) floating air pollutants, and this charged matter then becomes dormant, thus no longer hazardous to the environment.  Caution must be taken to select a UV purifier that does not emit and concentrate high amounts of ozone into your living environment. There are a few ozone producing purifiers that work well and don’t produce harmful levels of the toxic agent. They should be used in conjunction with HEPA since they both handle different aspects of air cleaning.  When it comes down to it, UV purifiers are capable of operating in larger spaces, giving them a bit of an efficiency advantage over HEPA units.

Keeping in mind that Americans spend over 250 million each year on air purification systems, it is no doubt important to be aware of some of their technical aspects.   Several factors come into play when deciding what unit is right for you, and choosing the most effective device is clearly important.   Finding units that provide you with money back guarantees and no risk offers is also a key to investing in a successful purification machine. Testing your air before could also be vital in selecting the right air purifier for your specific needs. With a little knowledge of how air purification systems work, hopefully you can invest in a model that will provide benefits for everyone in your household.
